Mold Collection(2016) is a wearable art inspired by the shapes, textures and colors of mold.

After a biological experiment with Ali Schachtschneider- a designer/researcher in biotechnology, and the author of Vivorium, and Annelie Koller -a multiscale designer and the author of Cultivate, to study how bacteria can be used as a design medium to make printed textiles, the collection was created with various techniques: hand embroidery, knitting, felting and painting.

This collection inspired by mold is an examination of innovative textile collaborated with creative construction.

Scientific explorations with deep research and reinterpretation of mold evolve more attractive and unique design identity showing beautiful craftsmanship which gives a romantic and modern feeling underlying a touch of playful sense.

I basically was intrigued by its shapes, colors, and textures. And the more I researched I could find more interesting characteristic of mold/fungus. It has the own way of growing and there have been many studies to reveal the secret.

Biological experiment;

I grew my own textile prints led by Ali Schachtschneider and Annelie Koller who are Parsons School of Design alumni researchers working with biology. In this workshop, bacteria was a biologically grown design medium, and it was used to create printed textiles.

I worked with naturally colored bacteria which secrete pigments that will be grown and printed onto fabrics, creating individual bio-textile pieces. Biomaterials and biodesign are the new and unknown yet exciting field to be discovered appreciating the use of science in art and design.
